Olimpija shines on the pitch, but struggles elsewhere: this time also a penalty because the eternal derby was poorly organised
It was known before the match even started that the disciplinary referee of the Football Association of Slovenia would have a lot of work to do after the eternal derby. And Boštjan Jeglič had to really do his best to “evaluate” all the infringements that took place in the Olimpija-Maribo match. The consequence? Expected. Both clubs together were fined more than €10,000!
No security at the entrance
It is interesting to note that Olimpija was not only punished because of the fans, but also because of its own negligence. As Jeglič explained, the Ljubljanaers also have to pay a fine of €6,600 because of the lack of organisation, as no security was provided at the entrance to the stadium. Security was not the only problem, with fans waiting in long queues for 20 minutes or more to enter the stadium. The other offences for which Olimpija was penalised were related to the behaviour of the fans: lighting torches, throwing them on the pitch, stopping the match, offensive chanting, etc.

Maribor is also fined €4,550. In his explanation of why the fine was so high, Jeglič said:“Unsportsmanlike and inappropriate behaviour of the fans – repeated lighting of a large number of torches, torches thrown on the playing surface, causing the interruption of the match, repeated offensive chanting, burning of a banner and a large number of chairs, pre-penalty.”
